He had long been affiliated with the Methodist religion, and had always been a most earnest worker in tis cause. Campbell at the time of his death was a member of the Methodist church in this city. Campbell company was changed from a partnership to a corporation, with a capital stock of $500,000. Campbell company has become one of the most important and extensive corporations in Houston. Campbell and family subsequently moved to Lampasas, Texas, where they remained until nine years ago, when they came to make Houston their home.ĭuring the nine years in this city the J. In his business he prospered and a number more lumber yards were opened over the state. Campbell sold his farm in 1880 and moved to Albany, Texas, and a short while later he opened his first lumber yard at De Leon, Comanche county. His father, Cyrus Campbell, was a Methodist preacher, who came to Texas in 1828 and grew up with the country, fought for the independence of the State against the Mexican troops and forged the fetters that bound Santa Anna after his capture at the battle of San Jacinto. Campbell was born in Austin county, Texas, August 31, 1850. Since that time his family had little or no hope of his recovery and the end was expected daily and hourly until the demise came yesterday morning. Campbell's health has gradually been growing worse, but until a few weeks ago he refrained from giving up and taking to his bed. Campbell and family have made their home in this city, and during this period and the number of years spent in other parts of the state his name has been connected with the best interests of his community, and in business and social circles his name ahs been among the most prominent. The news of the death spread throughout the city very rapidly and caused a wave of regret and sorrow that soon spread over the entire state.įor the past nine years Mr. Campbell Lumber company of this city and senior partner of the firm of J. Death came at 8:16 o'clock yesterday morning at the late residence of the deceased, 2908 Main Street. While the end was not unexpected, the news of the death of James Ira Campbell came with a severe shock to his many friends and acquaintances throughout the city and state. Interment will be at Taiban, at 2pm in charge of C V Steed.īesides her husband, J H Blackmore, she is survived by two brothers, John Rogers, LaLande, and Frank Rogers, Amarillo (Clovis New Mexico Evening News-Journal, Clovis, New Mexico, Thursday, J| )Īnnouncement of His Death Created Profound Sorrow.
